I was trading news releases a few years back, and made some great gains. I wondered if anyone was still doing this, and whether it still worked?

U mean you place bigger sizes per trade, as there are less trades, and movement when you get a trade?
What about brokers? Is it still hard getting filled?
Make Easy pips DAILY with Forex Dynamite
correct, less trades, big size
according to your risk/mm:
high volume broker: like alpari uk, because many alpari customers can trade news, so the gaps/swings will be higher
low volume broker: all broker with less customers, less customers producing less gaps/swings

Yes It is working yet and it will work forever. Because if someone is trading in forex market and he/she always makes a position according to the news, so that's really good, this is called fundamental analysis. In fundamental analysis news are very important factor, and as per many fundamental analyst, news really affect the market.
Obviously it is working yet and it will work forever. News trading is a good trading style where a trader can gain profit, only trader must know that when he should initiate the trade. If a trader is doing news trading with better timings then he can really make lots of dollars.
News trader initiates trades after an important or big news release, generally moves up and down after an important news release. A big news really affects the market, do traders must take benefit of this.
News trading is way way different to what it was 4-5 years ago. Now you will hardly get filled even within 8-10 pips slippage on hot news, say like non-farm, if data substantially differs from expected, if you try to catch it even in a microsecond of its announcement. While without slippage control you may end up opening position some 50 pips away and then see the market slowly (or fast) drifting against you. So I believe, and what I'm doing, think of trading the second wave if you're sure the data fundamentally differs from the expected, it had not already been priced in before the news and you visually see the the retracement is steamming off and the currency is ready to move the second leg.
